“I Am Agree”? Not in English! The Correct Way to Say “Je suis d’accord” in English

If you’re a French speaker learning English, you’ve probably tried to say “Je suis d’accord.”
And maybe you translated it like this:
❌ “I am agree.”
Unfortunately… that’s not correct. Even though je suis d’accord literally means I am in agreement, English doesn’t use the verb to be in this case.
✅ The Correct English Expression Is:
✔️ “I agree.”
It’s a complete sentence: subject + verb. There’s no “am” because agree is a verb—not an adjective.
❌ Incorrect | ✅ Correct |
I am agree. | I agree. |
I am not agree. | I don’t agree. |
Are you agree? | Do you agree? |
This mistake is very common—and totally understandable. In French, être d’accord (to be in agreement) is a fixed expression. In English, we say to agree, just like penser or comprendre.
🗣️ Practice Makes Perfect
Let’s practice some real-life situations in English:
In French | Say this in English |
Je suis d’accord. | I agree. |
Je ne suis pas d’accord. | I don’t agree. |
Tu es d’accord ? | Do you agree? |
Nous ne sommes pas d’accord. | We don’t agree. |
Want to sound more fluent? You can also say:
“I totally agree.”
“I agree with you.”
“I’m not sure I agree.”
“I disagree.” (more formal)
😂 Bonus Anecdote: When English Speakers Learn French
This mistake goes both ways. Years ago, one of my American students accidentally said “C’est d’accord !” after someone bumped into her in class and said “Excusez-moi.”
She meant “No problem,” but c’est d’accord sounded like “I formally approve.”
She had heard French people say “D’accord !” all the time, just like we say “OK!” in English—so she assumed c’est d’accord meant “It’s okay.”
Wrong context, but a very logical error!
